About

The Human Millennium Ancestry Dot Map project models the global distribution of ancestry groups at high spatial resolution. Every person is assigned to one of nine mutually exclusive groups according to where their ancestors lived around the year 1000 CE.

The model uses publicly available GHSL products, national census tables, surveys, and genetic studies. We use no private or restricted-access data. A detailed description of the methodology is forthcoming.

This is a map of ancestry, not of identity. Self-identification — the census question most countries actually ask — is used as an instrument for estimating ancestry, not as the thing being mapped.
